Replace Water Heater Drain Valve

Hot water heaters are expected to have a life of twenty to thirty years. This picture depicts a gas water heater with three of the four changeable components.

As long as the tank itself is not leaking, it is often cheaper to replace the part broken. Starting from the left, the copper line is a thermal couple. Thermal couples insure that the pilot is burning before allowing the gas valve to open. This is a safety feature to insure that the gas is being burned rather than filling up your attic.

If you are having trouble keeping the pilot on it is an indication that your thermal couple is likely faulty. We will describe the other components in our daily postings this week.
